Elena Mayville, Ph.D.

Evidence-Based Therapy for Couples and Individuals

Meet Dr. Mayville

Welcome! I’m Dr. Mayville, and I’m a licensed psychologist who offers therapy for couples and individuals. I also teach about cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and related topics as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine and as an instructor at the University of Washington. My background is in evidence-based and goal-directed therapy. I use a nonjudgmental, warm, and kind approach, and I help people develop empathy and acceptance as well as specific strategies for behavioral and cognitive change.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

I received a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University before completing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Yale University. I then completed my predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at NY-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. I have also completed an intensive external certification in Family and Couple Therapy at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in Manhattan. I joined the faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine in 2015.

SPECIALTIES

I specialize in CBT for anxiety, and was one of the therapists on a randomized control trial of Emotion Regulation Therapy. I am certified in Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy, an evidence-based treatment that incorporates empathy and tolerance with change strategies for couples. I love working with couples and people with anxiety disorders and/or relationship issues. I believe strongly in the importance of collaboration and considering a person’s unique qualities and aspects of identity (gender, race, sexual orientation, country of origin, family background, religion, etc.).

TEACHING AND SUPERVISION

I am passionate about helping others learn high-quality evidence-based treatments. I have supervised and taught CBT and couple therapy to medical residents and psychology interns at Weill Cornell Medicine and elsewhere. In 2016 I was selected as the “Supervisor of the Year” by the predoctoral psychology internship class at Weill Cornell and in 2022 I was chosen as “Didactic Presenter of the Year” by the graduating class of the University of Washington Idaho Psychiatry Residency Track.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS

I am a member of the American Psychological Association, the NYC-CBT Association (for therapists practicing CBT in New York City), and the Women’s Health Consortium. At Weill Cornell Medicine I am one of the inaugural members of the Recruitment and Retention Committee.

PSYCHOLOGY LICENSES AND PSYPACT

I am licensed in New York and Idaho. I am also a member of the Psychology Interjuristictional Compact (PSYPACT), which authorizes me to practice telehealth in Washington, D.C., as well as Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
